After the tsunami hit in December 2004, most of the survivors in Khao Lak, Thailand had no other work than to make handicrafts. In this city that was once supported by tourism, most of the Thai people worked in hotels that were destroyed by the tsunami. While many villages now have foreigners buying their handicrafts, the displaced persons camp in Bang Niang had little aid from relief workers, for it was further inland. Thai Totes is a micro-enterprise development; hiring women in this village to weave purses that we would later sell in the United States for more than 10 times what they sold for in Thailand. We then sold all of the purses to local residents and sent back the money directly to the women who made the totes. For all of the women, this was their only source of income since the tsunami hit six months before. With contacts in Thailand, this business will continue and spread to surrounding villages. We will support tsunami victims by purchasing purses and other handicrafts and look for US shops and boutiques to carry them.
